I've recently started kayaking and was looking for a good non-flip flop shoe to wear while paddling. I wanted something sporty and not "granola-looking" and these really seemed to fit the bill. I purchased the Ash/Aqua color in a 5.5. In regular sneakers I'm usually a size 6 with socks, and in heels or flats I'm a 5 or 5.5 so I decided to err on the smaller side since I planned to wear them sock-less. This was way too much thinking but I really wanted these exact shoes and no local stores carried them in stock. The shoes came pretty promptly. The color is true to the photos online. If you didn't notice though, where the back strap is, the material is like a nude stretchy fabric that doesn't quite match the gray cutouts on the top. It doesn't bother me but just FYI. I was so disappointed when the tops of my toes hit the front end of the shoe. I had to basically keep my toes scrunched up the whole time.
So I tried to wear them in the river once to see if they'd stretch out or if I could learn to live with the tight toes, but it just wasn't going to work out. I purchased a size 6 to compare the two in fit and comfort. When the new shoes came, they were TOO BIG!!! The size difference between the 5.5 and the 6 looked to me like way more than half a size. I looked up a new shoelace pattern to tie them tighter and that helped enough to keep them on. I wish the back straps actually did more to that end, but they honestly seem to be mostly decorative.
I've worn my shoes on two kayak trips so far and they have worked out great. They don't dry miraculously fast or anything, but they are comfortable and stay on my feet. I'm looking forward to wearing them on a hiking + paddling trip, to see how they do then. But for now, they are definitely my go-to shoes for river field trips!
P.S. I also bought the Keens Venice H2 (in a size 6) and I love them. It remains to be seen which of the two I end up gravitating to over time.
