The Zoot women's Performance 6-inch triathlon shorts run true to size. I am 5'3," weigh about 126, usually wear a size 4 or 6 in clothing or a size 32 Speedo swimsuit, and a size Small fits me in the Zoot Performance 6-inch triathlon shorts. Whereas, in the Pearl Izumi Women's Elite Inrcool Tri Race Short, I ordered a size Small and could barely get them over my hips. I returned the Pearl Izumi Women's Elite Inrcool Tri Race Short. (My previous pair of Pearl Izumi 2007 tri shorts were size Extra Small... this time I ordered up a size because of reviews, but I should have ordered up two sizes.) More about the Zoot Performance 6-inch Tri shorts: I like that the Zoot shorts don't come up as high in the back as the Pearl Izumi shorts that I returned. I liked the envelope pocket on the back of the Pearl Izumi Elite Inrcool Tri shorts better than the side pockets on the Zoot Performance 6-inch shorts. The chamois in the Zoot shorts and the Pearl Izumi shorts are typical of tri shorts in that tri chamois provide a small amount of cushion for the bike. The padding in tri shorts is much thinner than the padding in standard cycling shorts. (No one would want to swim in true cycling shorts during a triathlon though; after swimming, I imagine that would be like riding and running in a wet diaper.) I rode 8 miles in these Zoot tri shorts after several months of not cycling; I was a little sore afterward but was thankful for the small amount of Zoot padding. As I increase bicycling mileage, I ordered a pair of size Small women's compression DeSoto 400-Mile Bike Shorts. The DeSoto shorts are in-between: they have more padding that the Zoot Performance 6-inch triathlon shorts, but the chamois isn't as thick as on traditional cycling shorts. The DeSoto web site says that the 400-mile shorts can be worn for triathlons, but they are "not designed for repeated use as a swim suit in a chlorinated pool." I don't think the Zoot Performance 6-inch triathlon shorts or the Pearl Izumi Elite Inrcool Tri Race Shorts are designed for chlorinated pool swimming either, but people still wear them in pool sprint triathlons. My first pair of Pearl Izumi tri shorts lasted about two years with once or twice monthly use in a chlorinated pool. Just know that if you use tri shorts in a pool, they will wear out faster. Always rinse them out with cool tap water after each pool swim. Of the three types of shorts that I mentioned in this review, the DeSoto 400-mile shorts are the most comfortable; they are also the most expensive (about twice the cost of the Zoot or Pearl Izumi shorts). The Zoot 6-inch Performance shorts are a close second in both fit and comfort. Maybe I received an incorrectly sized version of the Pearl Izumi Women's Elite Inrcool Tri Race Short. They were too small, and the front was low-rise and the back came up too high.Pearl Izumi Women's Elite Inrcool Tri Race Short
