The headspace tool should work great. However, the documentation was not clear to me. I got way different readings on 5 different recently fired casings from the same lot of factory ammo. I ended up using a Hornady Lock 'n Load headspace gauge. The freebore tool was a waste of time. Not only was the documentation not clear, but the tool itself was difficult to use. I couldn't tighten the nylon sleeve tight enough by hand, so I had to use a pair of pliers. I got two different readings. When I gently pushed the bolt carrier on my AR-15 until it was home & the bolt locked, I got one reading. When I pushed the freebore tool into the chamber by hand, I got a different reading - shorter! I finally decided to try letting the bolt carrier slam forward normally. When I pulled back on the charging handle, the cartridge wouldn't eject. I had to use a cleaning rod to eject the tool.
Perhaps this will work with a single shot bolt action rifle.
