A few years back, had some great Julbo mountaineering glasses. Lost one pair. Another fell apart after sitting one too many days in a hot car. And so bought the current Julbo Explorer's with "Camel" lenses.

Note: Explorers could have top-end "Camel" lenses, "Spectron" polycarbonate lenses, or "Alti Arc" mineral-glass lenses. Many on-line sellers are confused about technical sunglasses. They don't realize there is such a thing, and so have a hard time giving details of what is what.

Explorer frames have much plastic and are noticeably heavy -- you notice them sitting on your nose. There is a tendency for them to slide down when sweating, especially if you are moving your head. They are "halfway-goggles", no sealing or tight strap around the back of your head to hold them in place.

All that plastic creates an internal cup with inward sloping rims making it difficult to clean the inside surface of the lenses. Pretty much need a tool to clean to the inside edge. And, unfortunately, you need to do this pretty often.

The inward surface of the lenses are sticky compared to the smooth outside surface (probably due to anti-fog coating). It tends to attract and retain dust and dirt.

You need to pack cleaning fluid and lint-free wipes to support the sunglasses, and then stop to clean the inside lenses every couple hours. Lint-free because the stickiness of the surface pulls out fibers and makes the surface even more contaminated. Damp kleenex or a cotton rag isn't going to do much but shred and deposit fibers as you wipe. Good luck if you have them hanging from a neck strap while you eat a granola bar; you'll have oat flakes almost welded to the interior surface. Have to immerse in water to get release.

They don't fog often; only at the worst possible times of highest exertion.

The showstopper for me is the strong brownish-yellow tint. In Southern California, this is a major natural color component of the mountain/desert landscape. When putting on such strongly tinted lenses, the landscape colors run together, contrast is reduced, and features become indistinct.

Julbo used to have Category 4 lenses that were a smokey/grey that was COLOR NEUTRAL. Perfect. Why abandon color neutrality and shift to tinting everything yellow-brown? Digging deeper, the "Octopus" lens they offer with the "Race" model of sunglass may be closer to the good stuff I've had success with in the past.

Photos posted by vendors around the internet often show Explorer lenses as being this dark smokey/grey, but "Spectron", "Zebra", and "Camel" lenses are not, regardless of photos. They are currently all deep yellow-brown (amber?) tinted at this time.

The current picture on Amazon has this incorrect lens tint representation problem. They must be images from several years ago (a problem in general with sunglass manufacturers ... making frequent changes without updating the product photo to correspond). You will actually get yellow-brown tinting.
