This is a great value in an inexpensive (I paid 41) good quality diamond plate. It is not perfectly flat (but it is very close mine two were .001) and I wouldn't expect anything better for the price. If you use the plate for steel, it will wear. They cut very fast at first but then taper off and seem to stabilize. My new plate is used for flattening ceramic/water stones only, and it seems to be holding up very well.

One note: Don't use heavy pressure on the plate, if it appears to be cutting slower, it may be loading up and need to be scrubbed clean (running water and a nylon brush worked well for me). If you put heavy pressure on the plate it doesn't wear the diamonds but it will wear the nickel and material that bonds the diamonds onto the plate and you'll lose diamonds and slow the cutting action.

I would recommend the d8x for flattening water/ceramic stones. I'll be trying them out on some Shapton glass stones next.
