I was a little concerned that this PVA type foam may not absorb water as well as the older type polyurethane foam, and only push the water, but it does do well in both moving water off, and also absorbing the remaining water. It can be squeezed out with downward pressure. It is well made and has held up well so far (less than a month?). I hang it on our screened porch when done to dry, and it does take at least several days to dry out, which is not really a problem.

10/2013 update: when the roller dries out, it does not work very well the next time used. Takes a long time to absorb enough water to soften properly, and does not work well until about a half hour after first wetting, then it is good. I usually try to wet it now before I leave for the courts, which is a pain. The old type foam may be better in this regard.
