Product Description
The 70M is the re-evolution of the award-winning Eclipse 8099. Still featuring the three clinometers system, combined clear base plate for mapping and mirror for sighting, and a round level bubble for more accurate measurements, the 70M has been fitted with our new Brunton O.S.S. alignment system for even greater precision and reliability.Brunton F-BOSS70M Mirrored Baseplate Compass Review
Bought this for a friend.... I own a legacy Brunton eclipse (which this model seems to replace). What's new:- Unlike traditional compasses that simply use a needle, both the Eclipse and the 70M use the "OSS" feature: two circles, that when aligned, provide the bearing/heading vs. the traditional needle matched up to an 'N' on the outer ring. There were some complaints about this with the Eclipse, so it appears that Brunton added a needle pointer to the rotating magnetic index circle so that the compass could also be used in a traditional manner.
- Another complaint (though I never experienced it) on the Eclipse was that it had to be held exactly level. On the 70M they have added a tiny bubble level to the face, though I am not so sure how useful that is... I never had a problem holding the compass level.
- Also a critique on the Eclipse was that the mirror on some would not stay positioned. It seemed to me that they had made the mirror hinge a bit more robust, but I could be mistaken on this point.
Notes: The compass shown on the above description actually appears to be a Eclipse model, not the 70M. I don't see the small bubble level which would be in the 4 O'clock position adjacent to the rotating dial. If you go to the Brunton company website, you'll see what i am referring to. (The compass that was shipped to me had the bubble level)
Do you need this compass? Depends. For basic back country hiking, teaching outdoors skills to scouts, boy scout trips... this is a bit over the top. For basic boyscout use or the occasional hiking 'adventure', I suggest something much less complicated and expensive (the 'OSS' feature may just confuse them). Youth will learn the basics much quicker with a standard baseplate or sighting compass in the $15-$25 range... and you'll be a lot less upset when it gets lost somewhere out in the woods. If you are looking for something to lay out orienteering courses, do extended back country navigation (off trail, multi day, directing aircraft), may be in situations where you need an inclinometer, or would have need for both a baseplate and a sighting compass... then this is definately a product worth considering. FYI - one can still find the Eclipse online for about half the price of the 70M... and the Brunton 60M has many of the same features but sells for about half as well.,
Pro: Multi-featured, settles to North quickly, can be used as a baseplate or sighting compass, 'closes' up into a protective case. I find it to be more precise in terms of being able to pull bearings.
Con: Expensive, a little more complicated to use (the average compass user will not need most of the features)
